Tree of Life Synagogue Mass Murder Kills Eleven and Wounds Seven
7 Ways to Survive a Mass Murder…even when you don’t have your firearm.
Unfortunately, the Tree of Life Synagogue shooting is just another in a long line of mass murderers that will continue. And we simply cannot blame the gun used. There is an element of cowardice and any piece of trash who can get their hands on a firearm is going to remind us how vulnerable we are and how fragile life really is.
As long as society continues on this will be a part of life and we need to know how to deal with it. Mass murders we have seen far too often in recent history and the universe has a sick way of killing scores of us unnaturally.
Such acts are not just limited to us here in the US, they happen even in country’s that have strict gun control laws. The problem is that when you attempt to limit the publics rights to own and carry a firearm the only people who will find a way to obtain firearms are the criminals.
Let’s face it if anyone in these locations where such senseless acts have occurred had a firearm a lot of lives would have been saved. We just simply cannot depend on the police or law enforcement to protect us in such instances. There is a certain response time and in that response time is often too late.
Make no mistake about it, such attacks are far less likely to happen in places where there is the possibility of the perpetrator meeting armed resistance. But someone walking into a house of worship pretty much knows that no one there will be armed as most legally licensed individuals will not bring their gun into a place where it is illegal to carry a firearm.
That being said, we all need to know that the gun laws are not getting changed tomorrow and there’s still a good chance you may have to face one of these maniacs without your firearm.
For the sake of this discussion let’s look at an attack that would take place in a house of worship and see what you could have been done differently.
Please understand that I mean absolutely no disrespect to the dead. In fact we do them a service by trying to prevent this from happening again.
It almost goes without saying that those who survived this senseless attack were LUCKY.
I can only imagine when the shots began to ring out people hit the deck.
But, there you are, unarmed praying and worshipping and all hell break loose. The realization and actualization take just a second or two but seem to last forever when it happens. Now what you do next means the difference between
1. Expect it, not to be paranoid, but it could happen anywhere at any time.
The first thing we must do is “expect it”. The days of it not happening to me are over, so stop denying the possibility and deal with it. It could happen in any public place, your kid’s soccer game, school play, restaurant or concert should have you playing the ‘WHAT IF’ game.
What if a killer entered through the front entrance? Just thinking about it and visualizing it will cut down that realization and actualization time and have you formulating a plan. Churches and schools should practice drills just in case. But that would be acknowledging the possibility, and what is wrong with that? NOTHING!
2. Change your Attitude.
Surviving this type of attack (or any other type of attack for that matter) starts with your attitude. This is by far the hardest reality to come to grips with.
You need to act as if… “You’re Already Dead”
Any action you take from that point forward is an improvement. Abandon the “hope and survival” mindset because it leads you to think that anything you do could possibly provoke your attacker, but nothing could be further from the truth. As we have learned from past mass murders, the killer only stopped when either his gun jammed, he ran out of ammo, he killed himself or someone intervened and took him out.
The sad truth is that if you act like prey, then you will be treated as prey. When you fight back you short-circuit the killer’s expectation. He is startled and that can often change the circumstances.
Whenever you go into any public place always scout out alternate ways out (just in case). If you happen to be in a restaurant, for example, there is ALWAYS one in the kitchen. Either way – don’t plan to go out the same way in which you came in an emergency situation such as a armed shooter attack..
3. Throw anything you can get your hands on.
If you don’t or can’t carry a firearm where you are, what could you use to disrupt an attacker’s advance? Books, glasses, tables, chairs and a whole host of lightweight, hard objects that could be thrown at the killer. In other words, anything you can pick up and toss as a projectile.
In schools, you might find books, desks, chairs, gym equipment and yes even the firehoses. Have you ever seen someone get hit with a blast of water from a firehose? It can take someone off their feet.
4. Take advantage of any opportunity when you get them.
As I said a shooter most likely continues to shoot until his gun jams or he has run out of ammo. But realize that any time there’s a break in the firing – is your opportunity to get up from cover and start throwing those tables, chairs, books and anything you can get your hands on to distract him while you close the distance and possibly get close enough to overtake him.
5. If possible ambush him.
Any doorway, corner or hallway entrance is a perfect place to ambush an armed attacker. These areas allow you to close the distance between you and the killer without exposing yourself. After all, the element of surprise is crucial in an ambush situation. Use it to your advantage.
6. Arm yourself.
Myself, I always have some type of weapon on me, a tactical pen, a walking cane, a roll of quarters, a water bottle, something… but for this type of situation, I would prefer an impact weapon like a blackjack, pepper spray, if it happens to be legal in your area. If you have never used such a weapon check it out in our self-defense training. You bash someone over the head or choke them out with your cane or walking stick it is literally “lights out” even if you’re 100 pounds soaking wet. It’s truly magical. These type of blunt items are often more effective than even a knife is that even if you were to stab him it could be minutes or more for him to really feel the effects of it. Plus, it’s psychologically easier to “konk” someone on the head than it is to run them through with a knife or a shiv.
7. Have some basic fighting knowledge (even just a little).
Look, if you don’t know the first thing about real fighting…start to learn, NOW. Don’t wait until you’re staring down the barrel of an AR. Even if it’s the bare minimum. Heck, every living being on the planet knows how to defend itself and so should you. You can learn a whole lot more in our 60 Minute Self Defense Course and we are currently offering a special discount on this program for a limited time.
Our society is not the world you grew up in. Those days are long gone and over. Expect more of these horrific situations in the future because and you never know where it will be next.
We’re at war, and it is us vs. them, good vs. evil. Take up arms and fight for your own survival.
